Hi Olivia,
You may have wondered if you have IBS or celiac disease.
Although they may have similar digestive symptoms, they are very different conditions.
Celiac disease is an autoimmune condition. When you have celiac disease, your body’s immune system attacks the lining of the small intestine when gluten is ingested.
Whereas IBS is a functional gut disorder affecting the digestive system. There is no known cause for IBS.
Luckily, we have rounded up the key differences between IBS and celiac disease:
- Triggers – many triggers can cause IBS symptoms; however, gluten is the only trigger for celiac disease.
- Diagnosis- there is no one test to diagnose IBS, whereas for celiac disease, there is.
- Symptoms - additional symptoms may be seen with celiac diseases, such as poor bone health and mouth ulcers.
We have written an in-depth post on IBS and celiac disease, which you can read here. |
