Do you know the difference between IBS and celiac disease? 🤔

Hi Olivia,

You may have wondered if you have IBS or celiac disease.

Although they may have similar digestive symptoms, they are very different conditions.

Celiac disease is an autoimmune condition. When you have celiac disease, your body’s immune system attacks the lining of the small intestine when gluten is ingested.

Whereas IBS is a functional gut disorder affecting the digestive system. There is no known cause for IBS.

Luckily, we have rounded up the key differences between IBS and celiac disease:

  • Triggers – many triggers can cause IBS symptoms; however, gluten is the only trigger for celiac disease.
  • Diagnosis- there is no one test to diagnose IBS, whereas for celiac disease, there is.
  • Symptoms - additional symptoms may be seen with celiac diseases, such as poor bone health and mouth ulcers.

We have written an in-depth post on IBS and celiac disease, which you can read here.

🙋‍♀️ Check out my interview with @bbcsciencefocus to discuss what the optimal time is to have your morning coffee.

❓Did you know this about coffee? What time do you drink yours at? Comment below 👇

☕️ Coffee contains a stimulant - caffeine. However your body already naturally produces its own hormone which has a similar impact and that is cortisol.

🥼When you first wake in the morning your cortisol levels are at their highest which increases your heart rate and helps your body to start using blood sugar.

⏱️ So if you really want to utilize the impact of caffeine then it’s better to wait until your natural hormones have dipped down around late morning, this also then gives your body enough time to break down that caffeine before you need to sleep.
