| Hi Olivia,
Probiotics and fiber have been hot topics recently. But what does this mean when you have IBS?
Probiotics are live microorganisms (bacteria, yeast, spores, etc.) that may improve symptoms of digestive disorders like IBS.
Whereas fiber is a non-digestible carbohydrate that ‘adds bulk’ to the stool, making it easy to pass. It can help to prevent constipation and reduce your risk for certain health conditions, like bowel cancer.
Luckily, we have rounded up some of the differences between probiotics and fiber:
- Supplement vs. food: Fiber is naturally found within foods in your diet but may sometimes be taken as a supplement. Probiotics are found in fermented foods but are usually taken as a supplement.
- Necessity vs. benefit: Fiber is needed by everyone for a healthy digestive system. Probiotics may benefit those with certain health conditions.
🚨 Please consult a qualified health professional for personalised advice when taking supplements like probiotics.
We have written an in-depth post on probiotics and fiber, which you can read here. |
